Best behaved heeler ever... :) Who though we'd be able to use a herding breed for demonstrations!!
Iam assessing these videos to see if they would be appropriate for use as reference for our veterinary technician program.I would hesitate to use this one (other than to show the students where the epaxial region is located) as it does not show ideal injection technique i.e.use of little finger to manipulate plunger of the syringe.
I'd be interested in seeing an alternative site for the IM. For example, for the patient who needs an IM injection of Diphenhydramine intraoperatively when the patient is placed in dorsal recumbency. As techs (especially new techs) we often are taught that the hind limb IM is taboo- to prevent sciatic nerve paralysis avoid it entirely- though I believe that we need to be comfortable with all IM sites, especially when accessing the epaxial muscles isn't feasible.
Thanks Dana - you can also use the quadracep muscle cranial to the stifle. I've tried that a couple times (careful not to go too deep with the needle) and it seems to be much more painful than the epaxial muscles but if the animal is anesthetized it's not an issue. Video on that one coming soon!

Do you have a preference for IM injection site in felines?
Hey Sophiane,
The epaxial muscles along the lumbar spine are great for felines as well, I tend to use them over others because of the muscle size.
Watched and loved! :) Thank you
